Obituary for MR. VOORHIES JOSEPH STRAUSS

MR. VOORHIES JOSEPH STRAUSS
Voorhies Joseph Strauss, born November 23, 1929 in Carenco, Louisiana peacefully entered into rest on March 24, 2016. He was the youngest of 16 children born to the late Noelie Collins and Joseph Cleopha Strauss. Voorhies found Christ at an early age and served as a young boy in the Catholic faith. As a young man, he was baptized at Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church.

He later joined New Mount Tabor Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Sam Foley and was ordained as Deacon and served faithfully for over 30 years on the Deacon board until his health prevented him from regularly attending. He retired from the City of Houston as a Sanitation Technician with over 35 years of service and was presented a commendation award for outstanding service by the then mayor, Kathy Whitmire. “Paw-Paw” or Mr. Strauss, as most called him, was a hard-working man with a gentle spirit and kind heart. He met no strangers and tried to help everyone that he could. He enjoyed talking to people and would always tell you he couldn’t remember names but he never forgot a face. He loved landscaping, raising champion toy terriers, being outdoors and attending to his goats and other “pets” he rescued and acquired along his life’s journey.

In 1982, het met and married his Soul mate and Best Friend, Dorothy Waites. They enjoyed sitting outdoors, working together in the yard, watching old westerns TV Shows and traveling to various places and church outings. He especially enjoyed her great cooking and her company.

He leave to cherish his memory his devoted and loving wife for 34 years, Dorothy J. Strauss; daughters, Sandra Strauss, Valerie Strauss, and Deborah Sims; two grandsons Christopher Berry and Robert Hooks; two granddaughters Latoya Matthews & Celestine Matthews; 7 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and close friends.
